Jennifer Lopez's relationship with Alex Rodriguez may have erupted into tabloid fodder when details of their rumored dating life leaked in March, but their bond started, conversely, very simply and quietly, J. Lo insists.

In a preview of a forthcoming interview with The Ellen Degeneres ShowLopez says the couple started dating in true high school cafeteria fashion, and that the romance began when she worked up the nerve to give Rodriguez a straightforward sign she was interested.

"It's very simple. I was having lunch somewhere and I saw him. He passed by," she recalls. "Afterwards I went outside, but for some reason I felt like tapping him on the shoulder and said, 'Hi.'"

"He [later] texted me, said, 'Let's go out to dinner,' and I said, 'OK,'" she added. "We had a nice dinner."

Still, Lopez sticks a pin in rumors that she immediately proceeded to spend the night at Rodriguez's place.

"No. Mama don't sleep over on the first date," she said.

Simple seems to be a trend in the relationship — Rodriguez told The View panelists in March that he and J. Lo get along so well because neither is high-maintenance.

“She just likes simple things. I mean, she’s a very, very simple person,” he said. “Loves family. Is a great sister. Is a great daughter…She was a track star in high school and junior high.”
