Singer Eddie Money was interviewed about the 30th anniversary of his album, "Can't Hold Back". It was a great album that brought us awesome tunes like "I Wanna Go Back" and what was probably his signature tune "Take Me Home Tonight". But he admitted to being less-than-enthused about having recorded one of his biggest hits.

In the interview he said, and I quote,

“I didn’t like the song, but it was good for Ronnie’s career and let’s face it — I’m a performer and an entertainer, not just a songwriter, so I gotta get out and do these things,” admitted Money. “It helped Ronnie out and it helped me get some of my other material on the album across, so now I’m happy I did it.”

In a backhanded compliment about one of his own biggest songs, Money said he did it more to help his duet partner's career, Ronnie Spector of the Ronettes. But it certainly didn't hurt his own, that's for sure.

A couple of years ago, I heard Mike Score, lead singer of a Flock of Seagulls, talk down about his band's biggest, and unlike with Eddie Money's larger body of work, it was one of their only hits, "I Ran (So Far Away)".

The list goes on. Bobby McFerrin has said he doesn't enjoy playing "Don't Worry Be Happy" anymore and there are other artists with similar philosophies about their signature songs.

Thankfully, these songs live on even if the artists don't like playing or hearing them anymore themselves, but I still find it disappointing when a singer downplays their major hits that we as their fans have grown to love. What are your thoughts on this? I'd love to hear them in the comments.
