Beast Row and Willie Ray’s Help to Feed Needy in Cedar Rapids
Lizz Burgess-Smith and Willie Fairly are two more hometown heroes helping hungry Derecho victims in Cedar Rapids.
After the storms hit on August 10, Willie jumped into action. He is the owner of Willie Ray's Q Shack, located at 288 Blair's Ferry Rd NE. and he's been feeding hundreds of hot meals daily for free to those in need.
He's been posting details on his Facebook page to thank his customers and other supporters for donations that have helped him on his mission to insure no one goes hungry.
Iowa's News Now has covered his story and says that Willie's Q Shack has become a big local legend, giving out up to 400 meals a day since beginning last week.
Willie grills up hamburgers, hot dogs, and also offers chips, granola bars, crackers, and bottled water. Lots of people are sharing his story on the popular and useful Iowa Derecho Storm Resource Page.
And he's not the only Cedar Rapids foodie who is stepping up to the plate.
Lizz Burgess-Smith and her husband Jason own Beast Row Mobile Eatz catering and they too have been kept busy since the storm struck.
Lizz and Jason have been preparing and offering meals with thanks to generous friends and donors who help provide funds to cover costs for those who cannot afford to pay.
Facebook friend Amy Cosgrove shares news that Lizz will be at Hawthorne Hills Apartments on Wednesday August 19 feeding many of those who are still without power.
If you would like to help them continue to help others, please consider a small donation to their Venmo account: @Lizz-Smith-7
There are many other hometown heroes stories to tell and many more volunteers to thank; from HACAP, American Red Cross, the Salvation Army, just to name a few.
And people like Lizz and Willie who give more than free meals. For many of us, their efforts renew our hopes and spirits that we too, can make it through these difficult times with a little help from our friends.
