Bomb Squad Investigates Suspicious Package in Iowa City

Officials in Iowa City announced last Wednesday that there is no immediate threat after investigating a suspicious package that was found in the police lobby of City Hall. This is according to the Iowa City Press Citizen.

Law enforcement, including the Johnson County Metro Bomb Squad, were called in to investigate and closed off many surrounding streets just after 3 p.m. on Wednesday. The Press Citizen reports that the University of Iowa issued a Hawk Alert at 3:18 p.m., announcing that multiple streets were now closed and that the public needed to avoid the area around City Hall due to a suspicious package.

The Press Citizen says that vehicles from the Johnson County Metro Bomb Squad, Iowa City Police, and the University of Iowa Police put up yellow police tape around the scene to keep onlookers away. Several K-9 officers led officers through parked cars as well. An Iowa City Police spokesperson told the Press Citizen that a suspicious package had been left in the department's lobby inside City Hall.

The city issued a statement just after 5:30 p.m. that the package had been identified and that there was no immediate threat to the public. The Press Citizen reports that the Iowa City Police Department issued a similar statement.
