A social media threat is being taken seriously by the Cedar Rapids Community School District. There will be no school in Cedar Rapids on Monday, October 2nd.

The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports that all schools, daycares, and athletic activities are canceled today for staff and students in the Cedar Rapids Community School District because of a social media threat. In an email sent out to staff and families on Sunday evening, the district declared all campus locations closed for the safety of all staff and students. The Gazette reports that more information will be provided to the public by Monday afternoon.

An investigation into the threat is underway by the Cedar Rapids Police Department, state public safety agencies and the FBI. Here is the official statement from the school district.

The Cedar Rapids Community School District is aware of social media posts made over the weekend by an unidentified person or persons affecting CRCSD property. Cedar Rapids Police Department and their resources were engaged immediately along with State public safety agencies, and the FBI to investigate the situation.
Out of an abundance of caution and following consultation with the Cedar Rapids Police Department, the decision has been made to close all Cedar Rapids Schools Campus buildings for the entire day, Monday, October 2, 2023. The Educational Leadership and Support Center will be operational. Communication from the CRCSD is being sent to all families affected by this decision.
CRPD Investigators began working immediately to identify the nature of the threat and its source. This has become a complex investigation and all leads are being examined closely. At the time of this release, no suspects have been identified and no arrests have been made.
CRCSD continues to communicate with CRPD and other agencies involved in this response and will work to inform families as quickly as possible as information affecting them becomes available.
Staff who work at the Educational Leadership and Support Center, the district's offices, are still expected to report to work on Monday, according to the Gazette. Staff who work in school buildings will not be allowed to enter on Monday.
