A report of shots fired in Cedar Rapids Tuesday night eventually led to another call and a victim found inside a vehicle, near a Cedar Rapids Middle School.

According to a media release from the Cedar Rapids Police Department, officers responded to a call of shots fired in the 1800 block of A Avenue NE at approximately 6:10 Tuesday evening. While responding, authorities received another call about a person suffering from a gunshot wound in a parked vehicle near Franklin Middle School, about two miles away from the shots fired location.

Cedar Rapids police officers then found a male gunshot victim, who was taken to a local hospital. The 20-year-old is reportedly in critical condition at a local hospital. His name has not been released.

Police found shell casings in the 1800 block of A Ave. NE and secured both scenes. They also notified staff at Franklin Middle School. According to the release, "the formal protocol was followed as a proactive response in advising school officials of the incident."

The investigation continues, but police say their investigation indicates the shooting was not a random act. We'll continue to update this story as more information becomes available.
