[UPDATE:  Iowa's News Now reports that Bever Pool in Cedar Rapids will close on Friday, August 5, 2022, at 5 p.m. That pool's K9Splash is still on for this weekend.]

Summer doesn't end until September 22, and the school year doesn't begin for another few weeks, but the fun will soon be over for the season in Cedar Falls, for those who enjoy taking a dip at the Falls Aquatic Center.

According to KWWL, the aquatic center is officially closing for the summer due to staffing shortages. The announcement comes just in time for a massive heat wave to barrel down on Eastern Iowa for the next several days.

State requirements call for 16 lifeguards on staff at Falls Aquatic Center available per day, But with many of their lifeguard staff departing for college, that will force them to close for the season on August 14 at 8 p.m. The annual Doggie Dip will still take place on August 15 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. This early closure decision follows one that was made in 2021, when the facility closed on August 23.

Staffing was an early issue for Cedar Rapids pools as well, and it remains to be seen if they will face the same decision to close any of their aquatic centers and pools early for the same reason as The Falls in Cedar Falls. As of this writing, all Cedar Rapids pools, aquatic centers, and splash pads remain open and at full capacity, except for Bever Pool which will close on Friday, August 5. Bever's K9Splash will be held, as scheduled, on Saturday and Sunday.

Meanwhile, those still looking for swimming opportunities in Cedar Falls will still have them, through Peet Junior High School's pool, which will be open to the public August 16-21 from 1-6 p.m. According to KWWL, swimming passes will be valid. Daily entries will also be accepted at $5.00 for adults (18+) and youth (3-17) while infants and toddlers (0-2) will be $3.00.
