Changes have started at the Cedar Rapids Public in the wake of a tax levy that was rejected last fall, resulting in major budget cuts. There are a couple of things you need to know.

    Closing Earlier

The most noticeable change is a reduction of operating hours. Don't plan on heading to the library last minute anymore, as both the downtown and Ladd library branches have begun closing one hour earlier Monday-Thursday, as doors lock at 8 p.m. Friday hours at both locations are unaffected by the changes, and will remain open from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

    Weekend Hours

If you're one who enjoys spending some weekend time at the library, like myself, you might not appreciate the weekend hour changes. The Ladd Library will now be closed on Saturday, but will be open from 1-5 p.m. on Sunday.  Meanwhile, the downtown branch will do the opposite, staying open from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday, but will now be closed on Sunday. By the way, Hiawatha and Marion's libraries are not affected by these changes.

    Internet Access

Another change involves the free internet access many have come to rely on for schoolwork and job searches. It will still be available, but with a minor setback, as the library will reportedly be unable to purchase new computers this year.

    Programs To Be Cut

Certain programs such as story time may also be cut, and they are ramping up their recruitment of volunteers to offset the loss of paid staff hours.
