Feeling safe is important. No one wants to feel like they're in danger in their home, or when they're out walking their dog or bringing kids to a park. A new study from WalletHub examined the safest cities in America and, it appears Cedar Rapids residents have reason to breathe easy, or easier if you already felt safe.

Where Cedar Rapids ranks, and why

WalletHub does this study annually, and in 2021, much like prior years, they use a few key metrics to reach a safety determination. Their rankings factor in things from actual crime and car accidents, to financial "safety" and even natural disasters.  Overall, cities in the Northeast did well this year with the safest city in America being Columbia, Maryland. Still, the Midwest was well represented, and Cedar Rapids was near the top.

The study found the safest 182 cities in the country and, Cedar Rapids was #59 on the list. Not bad. Like, at all. Cedar Rapids ranked higher or, safer than Minneapolis and St. Paul, Chicago, and even Iowa's capital, Des Moines which was #104 on the list.

Where Cedar Rapids did well, and where we lost points

Cedar Rapids scored high in Home & Community Safety. Certainly reassuring. One place the city dropped since last year... Natural-Disaster Risk. We did have that little derecho, didn't we? Yeeeah. That didn't hurt our ranking in natural disasters. In Financial Safety, Cedar Rapids finished relativity high as well.

The top safest cities overall according to the study are:

  1. Columbia, Maryland
  2. South Burlington, Vermont
  3. Nashua, New Hampshire
  4. Yonkers, New York
  5. Madison, Wisconsin
  6. Portland, Maine
  7. Warwick, Rhode Island
  8. Raleigh, North Carolina
  9. Burlington, Vermont
  10. Winston-Salem, North Carolina
