Charlize Theron Champions Gender Equality in Hollywood: Women Can Do the Job
Atomic Blonde star Charlize Theron plans to keep kicking ass in the name of women.
Theron, who's eagerly marched through 2017 in protest of President Donald Trump's administration, said during a panel at San Diego Comic-Con this weekend that she's actively pushing for equal pay and rights for women in Hollywood...even when Hollywood pushes back.
"I always say to studios, 'Make more female-driven movies,' " she said, according to Deadline. "They said, 'We would if people go and see them.' So go see those movies!"
Theron added that the success of Wonder Woman earlier this year is proof a woman-fronted action series can succeed.
“It would be nice to have some momentum and sustain it," she said. "A film like Wonder Woman awoke studios to understand that these (big) budgets should be handed over to a woman (director); they can do the job if not better.”
And Theron said she's recently been adamant about practicing what she preaches, and demanded equal pay for her role in The Huntsman: Winter’s War.
“I put my foot down…and Universal was like, ‘Of course., you were an incredible part of the first film,’" she said. "I think what’s missing is in that story everyone wrote about is that I’m blessed to be in a place where I can choose when I get to work...In my industry there are those who don’t have the luxury of putting their foot down, that they’re not going to come in for a job because they have families to support. The producers will then move on to the next girl and that’s where we need to stop that.”
