City Of Decorah Says NO To ‘Trump’ Flag Request

The city of Decorah has settled a dispute over whether a flag in support of President Trump can be flown on main street. Earlier this month, the Winneshiek County Republican Party asked the city council for approval to fly the flag the said "President Trump" and "Make America Great Again" on it.

The council, at that time, denied the request, saying that it had been submitted too late. On Monday, the council faced the same question only this time the flag request was for the 4th of July and it was submitted in time. The council once again turned down the request by a 6-1 vote.

The chair of the Winneshiek County Republicans said that he thought the flag would be approved if they took off the phrase "Make America Great Again", which the group did. The chairperson said he thought it hurt America when one group of people was being silenced.

City Council members said that they had members of the community ask them to deny the request, saying it was viewed as a move that was divisive and not supported by the community as a whole. Supporters of the flag say that it will likely be flown at a different gathering held at Water Street Park on the 4th of July.
