Coronavirus Deaths: Iowa Records Largest Single-Day Total

Gov. Kim Reynolds announced 19 additional deaths Tuesday, the largest single-day total to date.

According to the Iowa Department of Public Health, three of deaths were announced by Black Hawk County health officials on Monday. The victims were all adults -- one between the ages of 41 and 60, one between the ages of 61 and 80, and one over the age of 81.

Tama County also reported three deaths -- all adults over the age of 81. Another death was an Allamakee County adult between the ages of 61 and 80. There was also one death reported in Woodbury County and in Jasper County. Linn County reported six deaths. Polk County and Dallas County each reported two.

COVID-19 has now claimed 207 lives in Iowa.

Black Hawk County Health officials reported one additional death Tuesday, increasing the county's total to 19. They also announced 36 new cases for a total of 1,570.

Statewide, the number of positive tests surpassed 10,000 Tuesday, with 408 new cases reported. Governor Reynolds said 261 of the new cases were from Polk and Woodbury Counties combined, and 80 percent were from the 22 counties where pandemic restrictions remain in place.

State health officials say 389 people in are currently hospitalized with symptoms of the coronavirus. The patients being treated include 357 Iowans and 32 out-of-state residents.

As of Tuesday, 45 patients were being hospitalized in Black Hawk County. There were 22 being treated in Marshall County; 16 in Dubuque County; seven in Tama County; four in Benton County; two in Floyd County; and one each in Buchanan, Clayton and Grundy Counties.

Statewide, 3,572 people who have tested positive for COVID-19 have recovered. A total of 60,569 people have been tested.
