October is Breast Cancer Awareness and the Cedar Rapids Fire Department is again wearing (and selling) special commemorative t-shirts to honor the occasion.

Via a media release, the CRFD firefighters will wear pink and navy blue t-shirts all through October while on duty to support breast cancer awareness causes and cancer survivors. The firefighters purchased their own shirts and all proceeds will benefit Mercy Medical Center's Especially For You Fund.

Almost everyone has been affected or knows someone affected by breast cancer, and a continued emphasis on awareness while working to stop the disease is crucial.

The online site to purchase shirts is through the Cedar Rapids Firefighters Foundation, whose mission is to "directly impact the social, mental, and physical well-being of families living in Iowa". Through their five core programs, they raise money and support for the children, families, seniors, and firefighters living in our community. Place your order here in pink for $21 (short-sleeve) or $26 (long-sleeve). Sizes 2XL and 3XL T-shirts are $22.50 for short-sleeve and $27.50 for long-sleeve.

As a reminder, the Especially for You Race Against Breast Cancer, which takes place this Sunday, October 11 has gone virtual this year due to the pandemic. For the sake of following CDC social distancing guidelines, registrants will participate in their own neighborhoods, parks, trails, gyms, or homes as opposed to the usual large gathering. It's an unusual year, but breast cancer isn't stopping for the coronavirus pandemic.

They have helped over 10,000 people get access to over 21,000 services to help in their breast cancer fight. Simply purchasing a shirt will show your support and solidarity for those fighting against breast cancer and their loved ones.
