Saint Nicholas is coming to Czech Village on Friday December 1, handing out candy to good kids and a lump of coal to the naughty ones, as part of the holiday tradition known as "Svaty Mikulas"

It's just part of the festivities happening with the Czech Heritage Foundation and taking place Friday evening starting at 6:30 p.m. at Aces and Eights Saloon on 16th Ave. SW next to Kosek Bandstand in Czech Village.

The Czech Village Singers will also be performing. There will be servings of cocoa and cookies, followed by the lighting of the Czech Village Christmas Tree at Kosek Bandstand.

Local journalist Cindy Hadish writes that the ethnic holiday know as "the eve of Svaty Mikulas" is traditionally held on December 5, but has been observed locally on the first Friday of December to help kick off the start of the holiday season celebrations.  For more details on this free family event, visit Homegrown Iowan.
