Saturday was supposed to be a day to mourn the loss of an 8-year-old boy who had fought a courageous battle against cancer. It turned out to be the day the boy's young father would also die after being shot just 90-minutes before his son's funeral was to begin.

Saturday morning, August 1, at approximately 11:30 a.m., Davenport Police responded to a call at Weert's Funeral Home on Jersey Ridge Road, where a visitation for Jermier Shorter was to conclude at noon. 911 callers reported a man at the visitation had shot another man in the parking lot before fleeing. 26-year-old Jeremy Shorter of Davenport was the man shot. He was taken to a local hospital where he died from his injuries.
