Nearly 800,000 vehicles in the United States are part of what's being called the largest series of recalls in U.S. automobile history. Altogether, 953,000 vehicles are being recalled to replace the passenger airbag inflator, made by Takata. The Ford website says,

Takata has determined that propellant degradation can rupture the airbag inflator. If the airbag is deployed, a ruptured inflator can send parts toward the vehicle occupants, resulting in injury or death.

Here's a list of affected models:

  • 2010 Ford Edge
  • 2010 Lincoln MKX
  • 2010 and 2011 Ford Ranger
  • 2010-2012 Ford Fusion
  • 2010-2012 Lincoln MKZ
  • 2010 and 2011 Mercury Milan
  • 2010-2014 Ford Mustang

ABC 15 reports a chemical ammonium nitrate is used to inflate airbags, but that it can decline over time because of heat and humidity. When that happens, the airbags explosion can be too severe causing it to destroy a metal canister that's supposed to restrain it. Hundreds of people have been injured around the world and at least 23 have been killed as a result of the faulty airbags. However, Ford says they're unaware of any injuries from vehicles involved in this particular recall.

Vehicle owners will be notified by Ford starting February 18, if your vehicle is one of those under recall. Dealers have access to order replacement parts to correct the problem.

You don't have to wait to find out if your vehicle is affected. To find out if it is, simply enter your vehicle VIN number HERE or HERE. You can also get other answers to frequently asked questions.

A total of more than 50 million vehicles have now been recalled due to faulty inflators and only about one-third of them have actually been replaced. More recalls are expected to be announced later this month.
