CBS2 is reporting breaking news on this day after the election, that Attorney General Jeff Sessions has submitted his resignation to President Donald Trump.

Sessions' chief of staff Matthew Whitaker takes over as acting Attorney General. Whitaker is a former Iowa Hawkeye football player, United States Senate candidate and U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Iowa, according to Wikipedia.

Sessions' tenure as the top law enforcement officer under Trump has been a contentious one to say the least, after recusing himself from the investigation into possible collusion with Russia on the part of Trump, led by former FBI director-turned-special counsel, Robert Mueller.

In his letter of resignation, Sessions said "we have operated with integrity and have lawfully and aggressively advanced the policy agenda of this administration."

No potential replacements for Sessions on a permanent basis were named, and we will keep you updated on this developing story at our website and free mobile app.
