General Mills Workers Picket Ahead Of Possible Strike

Hundreds of employees at the Cedar Rapids General Mills plant could go on strike this week if contract negotiations fail.

Yesterday, many of them showed plant management how upset they are. The members of Local 110 of the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union say the General Mills contract offer simply isn't fair. Workers say they are looking for higher wages and holding on to their overtime and premium weekend pay, as well as healthcare and retirement benefits.

More than 300 people picketed in numerous spots around Cedar Rapids on Monday night, including more than 50 who changed and held signs outside the home of the plant manager in Robins. Many said that they wanted the manager to know that they were not happy with the last contract the company offered and how it affected their families.

General Mills union members will meet on Wednesday to vote on whether to accept the contract offer. If the answer is no, it could lead to a strike at the plant.
