Golden Globes Red Carpet Suffers Malfunction of Its Own With Burst Pipe
A "red carpet malfunction" doesn't usually refer to the actual floor covering, but that was the case at the 2014 Golden Globes last night (Jan. 12).
A section of the red carpet was soaked with 5,000 gallons of water from a burst pipe, USA Today reports. Just before the carpet opened to the stars, dozens of video journalists were forced to scatter from the area as the water flooded down from above.
A large light belonging to one of the crews was thought to have tripped the facility's sprinkler system. Sections of the red carpet were quickly replaced after maintenance workers rushed to clean up the water before it ruined starlets' sequin-studded gowns.
"We can confirm that there was a malfunction with a sprinkler near the red carpet. The situation was quickly resolved," said Irine Spivak, PR manager at the Beverly Hilton, which was hosting the event. "As some of the biggest names in entertainment are scheduled to attend Golden Globe Awards tonight, we wanted to give the carpet one last wash before it opened."
