‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Ending? Shonda Rhimes Has Written Six Different Finales
You can call Grey's Anatomy TV's own Energizer Bunny — for 15 years, it has kept on going and going and going. Still, when the new season premieres on September 27, will Meredith's latest adventure signal the beginning of the end?
In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, show creator Shonda Rhimes and star Ellen Pompeo spoke to the show's insane success, and said there have been times during which they meant to close the show's storybook, but it's stubbornly remained open. Still, Rhimes is glad it has.
“I have written the end of the show at least six times. But it just won’t end,” she said. "I’m incredibly proud of the show and I still every day pinch myself that we even got on the air, [that] people watch and people care as much as they do...Everything about this show has been a miracle to me. I love it.”
And Pompeo credited the fans for continuing to keep the stories of Seattle Grace afloat.
“I still care very much about the show," she said. “It’s incredible how this show just keeps resonating with every young generation. It’s really touching.
In May, Pompeo told Us Weekly that "there is an end, and it's nearing," adding "We’re getting there. Shonda and I will make that decision together,” she said. “I think that one of the biggest lessons that this show has taught me and being on this show for so long has taught me, is that relationships do change. And they do grow. They take work. Like any marriage, friendship. You gotta put in the work. You have to accept other people’s flaws, and accept your own flaws and try to change and be a better person. But I think everything is worth the time and effort. And things get better.”
Season 15 of Grey's will kick off with a two-hour episode at 8 PM EST on September 27 on ABC.
