How Bad Are Iowa Drivers?

Congratulations, Iowans! We are NOT living in one of the states with the worst drivers!

A new study from SmartAsset ranked all 50 states based on how bad their drivers are, using four different categories to determine their list. The article states:

"We looked at the percentage of drivers who are insured, the number of driving under the influence (DUI) arrests per 1,000 drivers, the number of fatalities per 100,000 vehicle miles driven and how often residents google terms like 'traffic ticket' or 'speeding ticket.'"

If you're looking for states to avoid driving, the top 10 worst are mostly in the south and on the west coast, with Alaska being the only one to not fit either region. Mississippi, Alabama, and California are the top three states with the worst drivers, while Massachusetts, Nebraska, and Vermont are the top three with the best drivers.

If you're wondering where Iowa landed, we made the good half of the list. We tied with Virginia for 32nd place. 91.3% of our drivers are insured, we have 4.49 DUI arrests for every 1,000 drivers, and we only have 1.21 fatalities per 100 million miles traveled. Not bad, but we could definitely do better. Maybe we'll improve on next year's list!
