A recently released study reports that 21% of the bridges in Iowa are classified as "structurally deficient" according to the American Road and Transportation Builders Association.

The list includes the 8th Ave bridge in downtown Cedar Rapids. It was built in 1938 and approximately 13,700 vehicles drive over the bridge each day.

According to the Federal Highway Administration, a bridge is classified as structurally deficient if the condition rating is rated 4 or below. This means one or more of the key bridge elements, such as the deck, superstructure or substructure, is considered to be in "poor" or worse condition.

In Johnson County the bridge on northbound IA 1 that runs over the Iowa River also was on the list. It was built in 1915 and carries 12,950 vehicles each day.

The state has identified needed repairs on 14,829 bridges, which the state estimates will cost $7 million.

The report also states that over the last ten years, 1,915 new bridges have been constructed in the state and 270 have gone under major reconstruction.
