You could get up to $500 back from Apple if you own or owned an iPhone 6 or 7.

Here's how and why.

A class-action lawsuit filed against Apple is forcing the tech giant to shell out a grand total of $500,000,000.

According to the court document:

If you were a US owner of an iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, 6s, 6s Plus, 7, 7, Plus and/or SE device that ran iOS 10.2.1 or later or in the case of iPhone 7 and 7 Plus devices, that ran iOS 11.2 or later before December 21, 2017, and experienced diminished performance on your device.

Did you notice that all of a sudden your phone started working differently after installing an upgraded operating system from Apple?

Was it slow? Was the battery life half of what it used to be? That's what the lawsuit alleges and Apple, instead of fighting it in court, decided to settle.

Because of that iPhone 6 or 7 owners are eligible for up to $500 back from Apple.

Keep in mind, that's the most you can get paid out. The more people who submit a claim, the lower it will go. The lowest any iPhone user can get back is $25.

There are a few different ways you can file a claim to get the ball rolling on your payout.

First, look for the serial number of your iPhone. If you can't find it, you can always get it from the box. If you don't have the phone or box, I'd recommend you check with your service provider. They may have it.

If you don't have either, you can still make a claim using your Apple ID (usually your email address) along with the type of phone you have with your name, and address.

You can file your claim at smartphoneperformancesettlement.com.
