A central Iowa couple is recovering after both they and a witness said they were attacked by a group of about 20 juveniles on their way home from a date Saturday night.

A 21-year-old man and his girlfriend were returning to an apartment after a date when they came across two different groups of juveniles in the skywalk of Fifth Street and Grand Avenue in downtown Des Moines. When the woman asked one of the groups if everything was ok, the two groups began hitting her boyfriend. According to a witness, the young man was also pinned to the glass and kicked and the woman was punched and fell to the ground, sustaining minor injuries. The witness said approximately 20 kids in hoodies took part in the attack. Des Moines Police were called to the scene at 8:57 p.m. on Saturday evening.

When officers arrived, the male victim was incoherent. The Des Moines Register says he was taken to a Des Moines hospital with "bruising, sharp red marks, and a swollen left ear."  He also had additional marks on his body along with shoe prints.

Video from WHO shows the injuries the young man suffered:

Several people were detained by police Saturday night but Sgt. Paul Parizek of the Des Moines Police Department says the victims couldn't identify their attackers. The investigation into the attack continues.
