Saturday night's Iowa-Michigan game at Kinnick Stadium has been canceled. The announcement came Tuesday afternoon, via the University of Michigan.

The Wolverines, who have canceled their last two games against Maryland and Ohio State, were forced to cancel Saturday's game when ESPN says, "Michigan's COVID situation has not improved since last week, when the school was forced to cancel its annual rivalry game against Ohio State."

The Iowa-Michigan game is the second Big Ten game for the upcoming weekend that's not going to be played. Earlier today, Indiana and Purdue announced they would not play their rescheduled rivalry game.

For the Hawkeyes, ESPN says Iowa could still get another opponent for this weekend if other teams aren't able to play. However, that appears unlikely. In a release from University of Iowa Sports Information from Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz' weekly press conference, Athletic Director Gary Barta said,

As has been the case throughout our current pandemic environment, we have known this is a possibility. We are disappointed the game is canceled, but the safety and well-being of our student-athletes is paramount. We look forward to Sunday’s bowl selection announcements and preparing for that opportunity.

Iowa awaits that bowl news with a 6-2 record. One of the few programs that had not had their schedule impacted by COVID-19, Iowa can no longer say that. ESPN is projecting Iowa will play either Kentucky or Missouri in the Saturday, January 2 Outback Bowl.

The Iowa women's basketball game against Ohio State on Saturday was postponed Tuesday afternoon, as well. According to Sports Illustrated, that was due to an increase in positive COVID-19 cases in the Ohio State program. The next Iowa women's game is Tuesday, December 22 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Iowa will be trying to extend its home winning streak to 40 games.
