Iowa Residents Can Apply For Red Cross Emergency Financial Aid
Residents who suffered damage in last week's derecho can apply for up to $450 per household in financial aid from the American Red Cross.
To apply call 1-800-REDCROSS, and select prompt 4. The story from KCRG says the application with the American Red Cross requires a valid text-enabled phone number and/or an email address for processing.
The money appears to be "no strings attached" for those who qualify, and they will be able to choose on their own how to use it. Replacing clothes or food, putting it towards transportation costs, or other immediate needs are suggestions for use.
Eligible applicants must have sustained "major damage" to their dwelling, which the Red Cross defines as structural damage that will require significant repair, including failure of the roof, walls or foundation. If your house is destroyed, as in a total loss or unlivable and un-repairable, you might head to the top of the list.
For local residents and families who have lost everything, it's hard to imagine $450 helping much toward their recovery. But it's certainly something worth applying for if you need all the help you can get.
Other information about resources available to derecho victims through the Red Cross can be located here or by dialing 211. If your application is approved, the funds will be delivered via Electronic Funds Transfer.
