Two Iowa State University freshmen have been charged with making threats concerning the campus in Ames.

Tuesday morning, the Iowa State University Police Department revealed that they were investigating a "post of concern" on the social media app Yik Yak.

According to its Wikipedia page, Yik Yak "allows people to create and view discussion threads within a 5-mile (8.0 km) radius (termed "Yaks" by the application). It is similar to other anonymous sharing apps such as Nearby, but differs from others such as Whisper in that it is intended for sharing primarily with those in proximity to the user."

According to Iowa State Daily, a Monday evening post had threatened the campus, telling people to stay away from Carver Hall on Tuesday afternoon, at 4:30 p.m." The threat reportedly said, "Some of y'all are ok, don't come to carver tomorrow 4:30 p.m."

The post, which showed whoever posted it was within 2 miles of the Iowa State University campus, went up at approximately 4:30 Monday afternoon, or about 24 hours before the time it threatened. The post was removed by the app before 6 p.m. Monday night.

According to Iowa State University Police Chief Michael Newton, a second post made a warning about Parks Library, the university's library.

Late Wednesday morning, Newton announced that with help from the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and the FBI, two arrests had been made. 19-year-old Ty Jerman of Ames was arrested:

According to Chief Newton, both have been charged "with threat of terrorism, which is defined by Iowa Code as an act intended to intimidate or coerce." Authorities say the posts were made separately and they do not believe there is a connection between the two men. They also say, "While there is no indication that either student planned to enact violence against the campus community, actions of this nature are treated as a serious crime."

Both Jerman and Malallah are being held at the Story County Jail on a $250,000 cash bond.
