A teacher at Okoboji High School in Milford has resigned after getting arrested for public intoxication.

On April 30th, 33-year-old business teacher Royce Van Roekel was a chaperone at Okoboji High School's prom at Boji Bay Pavilion and Fun House. At about 10:30 on Saturday night, police were called to the dance because Van Roekel was noticeably drunk. He was given a breathalyzer test and blew a .191, which is over twice the legal limit. He was arrested an taken to the Dickinson County Jail, where he pleaded guilty to public intoxication.

Van Roekel has since resigned, and his resignation will go into effect on June 1st. Until then, he is on suspension, and he has to pay the costs of hiring a substitute teacher for the rest of the school year. He also paid a fine and court costs that totaled about $225.

Do you think this is a fair punishment for the teacher? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
