Small Iowa Town Finds its Missing Token of History
[UPDATE 8/31/22, 6:33 p.m.]: Sheldon, Iowa can now properly celebrate its 150th anniversary this weekend with the news that according to KTIV, they have located their beloved time capsule.]
ORIGINAL STORY:
They're sure they put it in a safe place. They just forgot.
A time capsule was buried in the small northwest Iowa town of Sheldon 50 years ago, and now, no one knows where it is. The town was planning to open it, reminisce, and add new items to it to celebrate its 150th anniversary, but that part of the celebration this weekend has to be delayed. They're certainly not just going to start digging for it willy-nilly. They're going to have to hire someone to get it done.
According to the Des Moines Register, the town's Chamber of Commerce Director, Ashley Nordahl said they have a few ideas, but:
We’re trying to find instructions on exactly where it’s at before we just start digging. We think we know where it is, but to dig up concrete in the park when we have such a big event going on, we’re just postponing that to a little bit later in the year.
Sheldon is a city of 5,178 people about 160 miles northwest of Des Moines and was founded in 1872. The town will still get together for birthday cake and coffee to celebrate the milestone this weekend.
