You know what I hate? Sunday afternoon when I get an alert on my phone telling me how much time I spent using it that week. It's usually between six to eight hours per day, and it makes me feel like a lazy piece of trash.

According to an article posted by Verizon Specials, the average American spends approximately nine hours and 39 minutes a day in front of a screen. But let's break that number down even further. Using data from the American Time Use Survey, they determined the average amount of leisure time we spend on our computers each week. The study states:

"ATUS recorded time spent downloading files, using social media, browsing the web, and other leisure-related activities. Some activities were excluded, such as games, computer use for work, and other household actions such as online banking or shopping."

Americans spend an average of 90 minutes of leisure time on the computer each day, but that number is slightly higher here in Iowa. Out of the 48 states where data was available, Iowa was ranked number FOUR! Our daily average is 1 hour, 52 minutes, and 48 seconds. The only states to beat us were Alaska, Arkansas, and Mississippi, while Delaware, South Dakota, and Vermont were the states with the lowest averages.

How much time do you spend on your computer/phone each day (outside of work)? Tell us in the comments!
