Iowa’s New Fireworks Law Proving To Be Confusing

It could have been so much simpler. For years Iowa has banned the sale and use of fireworks in the state. But finally, the state legislature approved the sale and use of fireworks during certain weeks in June and July and again in late December through New Years. But the law also gave cities the right to change those time periods and even outlaw the use of fireworks even though they are legal to purchase.

If you're confused, you're not alone. Let's start off in Cedar Rapids. Last week the city council approved the sale and use of fireworks from June 1st through July 8th and again around New Years. Marion's city council approved a similar measure. The process to get licensed to sell fireworks is taking longer than expected so don't expect to see any retailers by June 1st. The city of Coralville is making headlines by allowing the sale of fireworks, but continuing the ban on their use. So I can buy them there....but I have to leave the city to set them off? Good luck enforcing that on the 4th of July!

We could have avoided all of this confusion if the state would have simply legalized the sale and use of fireworks year round. Yes, there would be a period of time where people set off more fireworks than normal. It hasn't been legal in years. But eventually that novelty will wear off. I have a feeling that all the confusion around this new law will lead to changes in the near future.
