The Iowa Hawkeyes men’s basketball game against the Gonzaga Bulldogs this Saturday is one of the most highly anticipated non conference games of the year.

Iowa is ranked number three in the nation and Gonzaga is rated number one. Iowa is unbeaten so far this season with a 6-0 record and is hoping to capture their seventh straight victory. So this game could be the prelude of a 2021 Final Four matchup.

The game is being held at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls South Dakota and because of the pandemic there is no attendance at the game for fans.

It will be only the fourth time Iowa and Gonzaga have ever played. Iowa has won twice dating back to 1984 and 1985. The Gonzaga Bulldogs have scored one victory over Iowa back in the second round of the 2015 NCAA Tournament.

It will be the sixth time in team history that the Hawkeyes will face an opponent while both teams are ranked in the national top five standings.

Iowa’s head coach Fran McCafferty has been at the helm for 25 seasons and last Sunday he celebrated his 200th victory as the Hawkeyes head coach.

According to Hawkeye Sports, team leader Luca Garza was just named co-Big Ten player of the week. He ranks number one in the nation in points per game at 29.2 PPG. and his 3-point scoring percentage is 68.4%

Garza scored 41 points against Southern University on November 27, it was the most points scored by a Hawkeye player in a single game in Carver-Hawkeye Arena history. Iowa is also getting strong production from Jordan Bohannon, CH Frederick and Joe Weiskamp.

Gonzaga has been on pause since December 2 after opening the season 3-0. How much that will impact their game on Saturday is debatable. The Zags have two players averaging over 20 points per game and three others scoring in double digits.

They won 31 games last season and head coach Mark Few recently reached 600 career wins. He has the best winning percentage among active head coaches at 82.8%.

Tipoff is at 11:06 AM this Saturday and the game is on CBS2 TV.
