Illinois’ Most Inspirational Landmark

Located just west of Chicago in Oak Park, this home was where the legendary American writer was born and raised. Today, it has been transformed into a museum (similar to Mark Twain’s childhood home in Hannibal), giving visitors the chance to see where Hemingway’s story began.

Hemingway was born in a second-floor bedroom of the home in July 1899 and spent the first six years of his life there. Restored to its original glory in 1992, the Victorian-style house gives a glimpse into the early environment that shaped his creativity and imagination.
