A Closed Cedar Rapids Bar Will Reopen Again for St. Patrick’s Day
If you attended the St. Patrick's Day Parade in Downtown Cedar Rapids on Saturday, you may have noticed that a bar that's normally closed was full of people! The Tycoon, located above Fat Wally's on the corner of 2nd Ave and 5th Street SE, opened its doors in honor of the celebration, and it will be open again this weekend!
According to the official Facebook page, The Tycoon will be open for business on St. Patrick's Day, as well as Saturday the 18th from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. An article from the Cedar Rapids Gazette says that the bar is offering cans of beer, plus a new cocktail called The Glowing Leprechaun, which is topped off with a green glowstick. Bloody Marys and mixed drinks will also be available, and there will be a DJ there for entertainment.
The Gazette reports that the Tycoon will look a little different to folks who haven't visited in a few years. An indoor wall has been removed to make more space, there's a ramp leading into the building, the ceiling has been painted black, and there is a new area with seating where one of the bathrooms used to be. Speaking of bathrooms, the ones by the back bar are now "larger, brighter, modern, and accessible." The bar can hold up to 500 people, so there's lots of space for folks who plan to stop by this weekend.
After this Saturday, the next time The Tycoon will be open is likely during the Market After Dark over the summer. It also typically opens for New Year's Eve. If you're wondering why it's not open year-round, owner Kurt Luedtke told the Gazette he doesn't want to "deal with it on a regular basis," so he just sticks to opening during popular events and holidays.
