Which Iowa Restaurants Serve the Best Burritos?

When it comes to burritos, a couple of Iowa restaurants rise above all the others!

According to a new list from Love Food, Fernando's Mexican Grill in Des Moines has the best burrito in the entire state! The article reads:

"Forget big chains. Fernando's Mexican Grill is the place to build your burrito of dreams. It works in a similar way to nationwide chain Chipotle, where you choose your filling from options such as chicken, chorizo, seasoned tofu, guacamole, and salsa. But it's the freshly made tortillas and meat that set it apart, with fans saying it's the best burrito they’ve ever had."

The Fernando's Mexican Grill menu has you start by choosing the meat for your burrito. Options include chicken, steak, barbacoa, and seasoned beef, but you can also order one with just veggies. Then you choose other fillings, like rice, pinto beans, salsa, sour cream, cheese, lettuce, corn, jalapenos, pico, queso, and guacamole.

The main Fernando's Mexican Grill has a 4.7-star rating on Facebook and a 4.5-star rating on Google. Part of a Google review from user Edward King reads:

"Truly the best burrito in Des Moines. Everything is made fresh daily from local ingredients."

Another portion of a Google review from David Luepke says:

"The burritos are unmatched in quality. Generous portions, fresh ingredients, and they are just delicious, bottom line."

Fernando's Mexican Grill has three locations: One inside the Jordan Creek Mall food court, one at the Local Bites food court in downtown Des Moines, and one in Drake University’s Dogtown neighborhood on University Ave. You can get more information on all three restaurants HERE.

A 2022 article from Eat This, Not That claims that the best burrito in Iowa is actually at El Rey Burritos in West Des Moines. The Des Moines Register says that they have something called the Rey Rey Burrito, which is "over two feet long and contains three kinds of meat." The restaurant also has a 4.7-star rating on Facebook, and a 4.6-star rating on Google.
