Sunday is going to be a HUGE day in Downtown Cedar Rapids! The 2024 SaPaDaPaSo St. Patrick's Day Parade will be "Back in Green!"

For the first time in several years, the St. Patrick's Day Parade will be back in Downtown Cedar Rapids ON St. Patrick's Day, March 17th. The past two years it was held on the Saturday before St. Patrick's Day, but the results of a Facebook poll in November of 2023 made SaPaDaPaSo decide to change it back to the actual holiday. There were over 1,800 votes, and 84% of those voters wanted to hold it on March 17th, regardless of what day of the week it falls on.

The 49th Annual SaPaDaPaSo St. Patrick's Day Parade will begin at 1 p.m. on Sunday and follow a slightly shorter typical downtown parade route. It starts at the corner of 6th St and 3rd Ave before turning down 2nd Ave, where the crowds always seem to be the largest thanks to all the bars and restaurants. The parade then heads up 2nd St before turning onto 3rd Ave, and then back up past Green Square Park on 5th St. You can check out the full route below:

If you're planning to bring your kiddos out for the parade, be sure they have a bag or basket with them so they can collect candy and other goodies! A reminder that, for safety reasons, items will NOT be thrown from vehicles, but handed to attendees by people walking in the parade.

It's also worth noting that there will be a VERY special guest in this year's parade... the Oscar Meyer Wienermobile!

After the parade has ended, there will be a big awards celebration held at Big Grove Brewery on 2nd Ave SW. The parade winners will be announced there around 4:30 p.m. and will be broadcast live on Facebook.

If you can't make it to this year's SaPaDaPaSo Parade, no worries! It will be broadcast several times on KCRG 9.2 in the coming days. Here's the schedule, according to Facebook:

  • 3/19 at 8:30 p.m.
  • 3/21 at 7 p.m.
  • 3/24 at 12 p.m.
  • 3/26 at 7 p.m.
  • 3/28 at 8:30 p.m.
  • 3/30 at 11 a.m.

Be on the lookout for the KHAK and KRNA vehicles on Sunday! We can't wait!

Cedar Rapids Home Built by Important Citizen Has Been Demolished

Built in 1917, it was home to several prolific Cedar Rapids families through the years. The home was constructed for the family of Arthur Poe (eventual manager of Quaker Oats and president of the Cedar Rapids Chamber of Commerce). Poe's wife Anne helped start the Linn County chapter of the American Red Cross. The home, at 340 27th St. Dr. SE, was demolished in December of 2022.
Arthur Poe was the grandnephew of author and poet Edgar Allan Poe.
