A New Cat Cafe is Coming to Linn County This Summer

Another cat cafe is headed to the Corridor in the coming months! Familiar Cat Cafe is set to open this June in the Uptown Marion area.

About Familiar Cat Café

According to the official website, Familiar Cat Cafe is owned by Kat Sung, who says that opening the cafe has been a "long held dream." Kat has a background in human services and crisis support, and currently works at a vet clinic to learn "hands-on skills in cat care, health, and behavior that directly support the wellbeing of the cats who will one day call the café home." You may have already seen Kat and their booth at vendor markets in the Cedar Rapids area offering fun, cat-themed accessories.

Familiar Cat Cafe will be located at 935 6th Ave in Marion, just down the street from West End Diner and directly next to another new business opening soon in Marion, Cedar Witch Goods. They plan to partner with a local animal shelter for their cats, housing the kitties until they are able to find their forever homes. They'll even assist in the adoption process if you meet a cat that you fall in love with! In addition to the cat room, the building will also be home to a cafe and gift shop that will offer refreshments, seating, and locally-sourced art and products.

When Familiar Cat Cafe opens, the space will host public events, fundraisers, and private events, like birthday parties. According to the site, the business' mission is simple:

"At its heart, Familiar is about Cats, Coffee, and Cosmic Vibes, but it is also about healing, belonging, and connection. Whether you come for a quiet cup of coffee, time with adoptable cats, or a gathering with community, my hope is that Familiar feels like a place where you are honored and valued."

Familiar Cat Cafe follows in the footsteps of Kitty Corner Social Club, a cat lounge in Iowa City that just celebrated a year in business this February. In that first year in business, Kitty Corner helped 300 cats get adopted from local animal rescues! We can only hope that Familiar Cat Cafe is able to find similar success!
