Since moving here back in 2014, I've been told that I need to travel up to Northeast Iowa during the fall to experience some of Iowa's most beautiful views. On a whim, I decided that I would use my random day off to finally make that trip! On Monday, October 26th, I made a solo road trip up to Pikes Peak State Park in McGregor, one of Iowa's most popular parks.

According to the Iowa DNR, Pikes Peak State Park features 11 miles of trails, a waterfall, the 'Bear Mound' Effigy Mound, and a 500-foot bluff where visitors can take in some of the most scenic views of the Mississippi River and Wisconsin River. Here's a quick rundown of my day at the park!

Point Ann Trail

Because I had absolutely no idea where I was going, I simply typed "Pikes Peak State Park" into my GPS and went on my way. After about an hour and 45 minutes on the road, I arrived at the Homestead Parking Lot, which led right into the Point Ann Hiking Trail. It was only 1.6 miles to Point Ann, so I grabbed my water bottle and went on my way!

Because it was a Monday morning, I encountered maybe five people on my hike to Point Ann. When I finally arrived at the overlook, I ended up sitting there for over an hour, completely alone (except for a few eagles flying overhead). It was so peaceful, I could've stayed there all day!

The Main Entrance

After my hike back to my car, I drove up the road to the park's main entrance, where there are a few scenic overlooks very close to the parking lot. From there, I took the Bridal Veil Trail to the Crow's Nest, another overlook, passing by some Effigy Mounds on my way. After hitting Bridal Veil Falls, one of Iowa's few waterfalls, I turned around and headed back to the parking lot via the Myotis Trail. In total, I probably spent around three hours hiking and enjoying the views at Pikes Peak State Park. Not a bad way to spend a Monday!
