Spencer Lee Dominates at Zagreb Open: Wins Gold, Shows Why He’s One of Wrestling’s Best
We've seen lots of talent come out of the University of Iowa. Cooper DeJean, a Philadelphia Eagles rookie, potentially winning a Super Bowl in his first year would be quite the accomplishment.
And, how could I not say Caitlin Clark when it comes to outstanding athletes who were once Hawkeyes? Many other names could be mentioned when reminiscing about amazing Hawkeyes.
Which Hawkeye Won More Gold?
According to the Cedar Rapids Gazette, Spencer Lee was a show-stopper at the Zagreb Open in Croatia on February 5, 2025. It was another stellar performance for Spencer, as he went on to claim the gold medal.
The Cedar Rapids Gazette says that in the finals, he faced Islam Bazarganov from Azerbaijan and won 3-0.

Bazarganov tried to make a comeback, pulling the score to 3-2, but Spencer wouldn't have any of it, finishing the bout 6-2. This is another big win in Spencer's already impressive career, with the 2024 Olympic silver medal fresh on his resume and now an undefeated victory for gold.
How Did Spencer Lee Get the Win?
The first match of the day was Spencer Lee vs Luka Gvinjilia of Georgia, with Lee taking that round 11-0, says FloWrestling. That win was followed up with a victory over Roman Bravo-Young from Mexico in the semifinals.
The day wasn't over. Spencer went on to secure a decisive 6-2 victory in the finals. With Lee racking up major wins, could this be what sets Spencer up for future events like the World Championships or next year's Olympics?
Time will tell, but right now, let's bask in the glow of gold. Congratulations to Spencer Lee for another amazing performance! We look forward to many more.
