Dave Portnoy Blown Away by ‘Crab Rangoon Pizza’ in Des Moines

Three weeks ago, when attending GalaxyCon in Des Moines, Catherine insisted we stop at Fong's Pizza, one of her favorite places to eat when in the capitol. She promised it would be unlike any pizzeria I'd ever been to. And she was correct. Fong's Pizza has the hallmarks, aesthetic, and even menu-design of a Chinese restaurant, and a plethora of different specialty pizzas inspired by Asian cuisine.

Located in Des Moines' bustling East Village, Fong's Pizza is the home of the original "Crab Rangoon Pizza," which is exactly what it sounds like. An amalgam of pizza and Chinese food that is sweet, sticky, and savory. Clearly, word got out to Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy, who famously hosts the online series One Bite Pizza Reviews.

Portnoy has been reviewing pizza for years in a delightfully casual way. He travels the country, every corner of the US, orders a plain cheese pizza, and stands outside the restaurant trying/reviewing the pizza (and trying not to burn his mouth in the process).

Last night, Portnoy uploaded a video of him reviewing Fong's Pizza in Des Moines, much to the delight of myself and many other Iowans. Furthermore, a shoutout is owed to Shelby, one of the workers at Fong's, who is featured in the video. Portnoy insisted on ordering a cheese pizza. Shelby obliged, but informed him that nobody comes to Fong's for cheese pizza and that he needs to order a Crab Rangoon Pizza in addition. He took her advice. And was glad he did.

In the video, Portnoy explains that he's not typically fond of artisanal or specialty pizzas, but marveled at the fusion of Italian and Chinese cuisine. Catherine had me try a slice of her Crab Rangoon Pizza. I was skeptical, as I'm sure many are, but I was impressed by it. I couldn't eat more than a slice or two, but it's a delightful treat that isn't common at all.

Portnoy brings up the same point I made about Crab Rangoon Pizza. Consider if you were to eat an entire medium-sized pie by yourself. That's probably five or six appetizers worth of Crab Rangoon. It's a pizza that begs to be shared amongst friends. That being said, he still gave it a 7.6/10, which is particularly high, as Portnoy has proven to be a tough critic.

Also delightful is a train horn blaring in the background (if you've spent any length of time in Des Moines, you know that's the soundtrack of the city). Portnoy makes a comment about the train horn, to which Shelby responds by saying trains go by and blare their horns all day long. She's an agreeable plus-one for Des Moines. She epitomizes "Iowa nice."
