I was only ever in an IKEA once, and it was an experience. An exhausting one at that. Unlike most department stores, or even superstores, IKEA is one you truly have to plan to endure. The store is massive, the options are huge, and certain departments in the warehouse are as large as some small businesses themselves.

From there, if you find an appliance you like, lugging it home can be an operation. And then, once you're home, you have to build the appliance, and famously, IKEA furniture is about as complicated and layered to construct as the hardest LEGO sets. My mother and I constructed a dresser from IKEA one time, and it took us hours.

A New IKEA Will Be Near the Homefront:

Last week, it was revealed that IKEA plans to open a new store in Madison, WI later this fall. It will be the second location in the state of Wisconsin. Presently, the only store of its kind in the state is in Oak Creek. The forthcoming Madison store will be located at Prairie Towne Center at 215 Junction Road. There is no IKEA in Iowa, so this will likely be the closest option for Dubuquers at only an hour and 24 minutes away.

At IKEA, we believe that a better everyday life starts at home — and that means making shopping IKEA easy and convenient. Opening a new location in Madison is part of our continued commitment to reaching customers where they are, making well-designed, affordable home furnishing solutions more accessible and convenient than ever before - Rob Olson, Interim CEO at IKEA U.S, per IKEA's website

The new IKEA Madison location will be a 54,000 square-foot space featuring fully furnished room settings to showcase every kind of appliance you can imagine.

More than 5,000 products will be on display, with approximately 3,000 available for "immediate take away." Those products include: furniture, textiles, lighting, accent pieces, and over 130 furniture items. Larger items (IE: sofas and beds) can be ordered via in-store or online and shipped directly to the consumer, or available at a pickup location, per IKEA's website.

And Of Course, Food Options Will Be Available:

Being that IKEA stores feel like they span a small city, there are food options available in most of them, courtesy of the department store's flagship "Swedish Deli." The meatballs are a popular option, but plant balls, falafel balls, hot dogs, veggie dogs, cinnamon buns, and more will be available at IKEA Madison.

You can find out more about IKEA Madison, slated to open in fall 2026, on IKEA's official website.
