A national pharmacy has announced that they will be closing over a couple hundred locations nationwide. The justification behind the store closings is due to the company's ongoing restructuring efforts that are meant to "streamline operations" and loan themselves to helping adapt to consumer needs, per Newsweek.

As I've written about practically two dozen times myself over the last six months, a bevy of once-ubiquitous chains are shuttering locations at a rapid rate. The landscape for mid-level chain restaurants has been looking especially bleak and brutal as of late. This year, Hooters has filed for bankruptcy, and Red Robin is also planning to close 70 locations too. Recently, TGI Fridays was confirmed to be down to just 85 locations, with only a combined four remaining in Iowa, Illinois, and Wisconsin (none of which in Iowa).

CVS is the Latest Company Making Some Grave Decisions:

Now, CVS will be closing an additional 271 retail locations this year. This follows the closure of around 900 CVS locations between 2022 and 2024. A CVS spokesperson told Newsweek that the imminent closures will "enable the company to optimize its existing stores and pharmacies."

The following factors were taken into consideration when deciding whether or not a specific pharmacy location would be closed, per Newsweek, including:

What These Closures Do to Pharmacy Access:

A CVS spokesperson told Newsweek that even post-realignment, "85% of the people in the US still live within 10 miles of a CVS Pharmacy." That's how ubiquitous they are:

Store closure decisions are based on several factors, including population shifts, consumer buying patterns, store and pharmacy density, pharmacy care access, and community health needs. We're focused on ensuring we have the right kinds of stores and the right number of stores in the right locations. We're closing locations strategically to better meet consumers' health, wellness and pharmacy care needs – as announced more than three years ago – not in reaction to industry pressures - a CVS spokesperson, per Newsweek
