Yes, the pictures are all over our social media feeds now too.

Today, school started in Iowa for multiple grades and school is still early in the semester for Illinois schools. Of course, if you're a parent of a kiddo in any grade level, you're proud of them and you may want to post it on social media. Which is fine, but there's a warning attached to it.

I remember this every back-to-school time and since I've already seen people do this this morning so consider it a warning. Actually, one straight from police.  Parents across the Midwest are being reminded about this in their morning pictures, the ones with the little signs featuring their names and grades. They're cute but here's what you don't want in that picture.

Unfortunately, we live in a world where predators will use whatever information you post about your kid to prey on them. Things like your child's school, their teacher, their age, their favorite things, their birthday. It's all very cute and should be innocuous but alas people are terrible so here we are.

Parents are also reminded in these cute little back-to-school pics to be mindful of their backgrounds. Not for aesthetic purposes, but just to make sure you're not including other kids in the picture or that the location can be easily identified.

Turn off location services (which is now a thing on Insta) to keep that location from being a part of that photo's data.

It may seem paranoid to consider all of this just for a first day of school picture. But any precaution to keep the kids safe is a good one.
