Eastern Iowa Law Enforcement Warn Of IRS Scam
It's tax season. You're probably waiting to file your taxes, waiting to get your refund, or you're ready to burn it all down because you owe. Whatever your situation is, it's a stressful time of year.
Whether you're doing taxes yourself or getting them done professionally, you just don't want to go to jail because you committed tax fraud. You also don't want to lose money because some jerk is trying to scam you with false information.
Law enforcement out of Eastern Iowa is trying to warn citizens about an IRS scam going around that you need to be aware of. This is a typical scam this time of year and a good reminder to stay vigilant.
Clinton County Sheriff Warns Of IRS Scam
In a social media post this week, officials with the Clinton County Sheriff's Office posted a warning to everyone about an IRS scam hitting people's text messages.
The post below is an example of one text that several people have received and made reports to authorities about. The reports came to the Clinton County Sheriff's office after receiving phony text messages appearing to originate with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
The messages, which look like to be from a random email account, offer $1,400 as an "Economic Impact Payment", or a stimulus check. The IRS is not going to contact you via an iCloud email address, by the way.
Officials say that the text messages are fake and you shouldn't respond to them or click the link in the message.
