Will Illinois Clocks Fall Back As State Pushes To End Daylight Saving Time?
It's not a favorite time of year for a lot of us.
The fall/winter clock change is the bane of existence for us in November. We lose an hour of sleep, it's dark outside longer, it's when we start dreaming about 7:00 p.m. sunsets again.
Both national and state legislation has been brought forward that would end the clock changes. Earlier this year, Illinois renewed a push to establish permanent daylight saving time so Illinois would not switch back to standard time in the fall.
There's been a longstanding push for it in both Illinois and Iowa: in 2021 alone, at least 7 bills were introduced in Illinois House involving daylight saving time, according to KGW. In Iowa, 2 bills have been recently introduced that involve daylight saving time.
On the national level, the Sunshine Protection Act of 2021 would make Daylight Saving Time (DST) the standard. It did not advance through both the U.S. House and Senate.
We're Still Losing Sleep In November
So sorry to burst your bubble, but yes, both Illinois and Iowa will 'fall back' on Sunday, November 2nd.
Neither state has legislation in place to end the time change, nor is there any development of it on the national front. But it seems like everyone is tired of it. Most states have had legislation involving daylight saving time introduced at some point in the last several years.
If you're wondering why the clock changes at 2:00 a.m., it is because the time was the least disruptive to old Amtrak and train schedules. author Michael Downing told Time Magazine.
