The Friday Revolution: Why the Old Rules Died

It sounds too good to be true...starting your vacation on a Friday and actually saving money? In the past, Fridays and Sundays were the most expensive days to fly because of the weekend rush. However, a massive shift in how people work and travel has flipped the script.

According to Melanie Fish, head of Expedia Group Brands public relations, the change is driven by a shift in corporate habits. “Business travelers head home earlier in the week these days, so new opportunities are opening up for leisure travelers to save by choosing smarter travel days, like Friday,” she explained.

Expedia found that booking on a Friday can save you about 3% compared to the weekend. Even better, flying on a Friday is now the cheapest day for international trips, costing about 8% less than a Sunday departure.

Domestics and Crowds: When to Actually Go

While Friday is the new king of international travel, the rules for flying within the U.S. are slightly different. If you’re staying domestic, Tuesday remains the cheapest day to fly, offering savings of up to 14% compared to Sundays.

The August Goldmine and the "Magic Window"

If you really want to slash your travel budget, you need to look at the calendar as a whole. The cheapest month to fly is August, with fares a staggering 29% cheaper than the December holiday peak. On average, this saves travelers about $120 per ticket.

Expedia also busted the myth that you have to book six months in advance to save. In fact, booking too early can actually cost you. For domestic flights, the "magic window" is between 15 and 30 days before departure. For international treks, booking 31 to 45 days out is the sweet spot.
