From day one of my life, my parents made sure I paid attention when crossing the road, even in Ida Grove, Iowa, where the traffic is minimal. I can still hear my mom say "Look both ways!" and "Hold my hand!"

The sentiment clearly holds a higher value in places where there's a significant amount of traffic, and when the vehicles exceed speeds of 70 miles per hour.

Unfortunately, those lessons regarding safety in and around traffic don't always carry into adulthood for everyone.

According to KCRG, one person was killed by a semi-truck that was driving on Interstate-80 in Scott County last night, September 6. The crash happened at 9:02 PM at mile marker 291.

The Iowa State Patrol reported that the semi was headed west on the interstate when a car was parked on the inside shoulder of the road. That's when an occupant of the vehicle opened the door and stepped into oncoming traffic. They walked into the path of the oncoming semi and were struck.

Per KCCI, the driver of the tractor-trailer was 46-year-old Kurt Von Dallmeyer, of Wellman, Iowa. Wellman is located about 25 miles southwest of Iowa City and has a population of just over 1,500.

The person died of the injuries they sustained at the scene of the crash. The identity of the individual who was killed has not been released, pending the person's family being notified.

Von Dallmeyer escaped the accident unharmed. Von Dallmeyer was driving a 2018 Freightliner semi-truck.

The crash is currently under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol.
