On Monday, November 18th the Waterloo City Council determined the fate of the Crossroads Mall.

Located at 2060 Crossroads Boulevard in Waterloo, this mall opened in the 1970s. While it was once a bustling shopping center, over the years it has become a vacant and forgotten shell of its former self.

Currently, there are less than fifteen businesses inside of the Waterloo mall. These include; an Air Force Recruiting Center, Applebee's, Jazzercise, and Geno's Pizza.

Waterloo City Council Approve Plan to Demolish Crossroads Mall

During Monday's meeting, the Waterloo City Council signed off on a plan to demolish and develop the empty mall.

City officials reached an agreement with Waterloo Crossroads Development LLC. This deal means that the city of Waterloo plans to offer $20 million to reimburse the company to cover the costs of acquisition, demolition, and redevelopment, according to a report from KWWL.

The mall is owned by Namdar Realty Group, this is the same organization that owns and operates College Square Mall in Cedar Falls.

What Will Be Put In Place of Crossroads Mall in Waterloo?

According to a report from the Waterloo Courier, there is already a plan for what will be in this new space.

Once the Crossroads Mall is demolished the area will be replaced with some standalone stores, ball courts, recreation areas, and apartments.

Demolition Timeline

In a report from KWWL, the developers are planning to close this deal in the new year. Once the sale is final in January, demolition on the Crossroads Mall will commence in the summer.

There's no word on when the project will be complete, but we will keep you updated as more details are made available and the project moves further along in the process.
