Could the Cedar Rapids Kernels use a cannon like this in the bullpen?! That might be taking it a little too far...but Lois sure put some mustard on this toss!

Maybe Lois has lost a little zip on the heater over the years but that didn't stop her from stepping onto Veterans Memorial Stadium and throwing out the first pitch this past Wednesday (August 14).

Lois Martin

The Cedar Rapids Kernels and the fans who attended the game had a special guest on Wednesday as 95-year-old Lois Martin through out the first pitch! I'm 33 years old and it's hard for me to imagine doing many athletic endeavors at 95 but that didn't stop this young lady from taking the mound! Way to go Lois!

Lois Spoke to CBS Iowa and it turns out that this was all a surprise for Lois, which was planned by her family.

"My kids conned me into this. They have a promotion, so they planned this a long time ago because my family wanted me to throw this first pitch out representing Harley Davidson, which my granddaughter’s husband owns."

Fans got to see Lois' first pitch and cheer on the Kernels to a 5-2 victory over the South Bend Cubs.

The Story Doesn't End Here!

I happen to work with someone named Carly Martin who is Lois' granddaughter. I asked Carly a few questions about Lois and it sounds/looks like she's still an incredibly active lady.

"My grandma could do laps around everyone even at the age of 95! She is the hardest working woman I know. She still runs a zero turn mower, weed whacks, runs a chain saw, helps on the farm with the pigs, bakes, gardens, teaches Sunday school and Bible school…just to name a a few things."

I also asked Carly how long her grandma has been a baseball fan and it turns out that baseball is the sport she probably watches the least! Carly happens to be an Iowa State graduate and even though I'm sure her grandma loves her dearly...Lois is a Hawkeye basketball fan through and through. She even has season tickets to watch the women's team.

"She probably watches baseball the least because she is outside working in the summer and fall but during the winter she is glued to the TV for basketball games. I hate to admit this as an Iowa state fan but she is a a season ticket holder for the Iowa Women’s basketball team."

You can see Lois first pitch in Carly's video right here. The style with the bucket hat is almost as impressive as the first pitch. I bet Lois didn't know high school kids would be jealous of this swagger!

Lois appears to be a pretty busy lady this week. She went from throwing out the first pitch at a Kernels game to joining the Iowa State Fair pig show this morning (August 16). Where does Lois find the energy?! I'd be out for 2 weeks if I had to throw out a first pitch at a baseball game!

Yep, Carly was right. Lois can run laps around just about anyone.
