I don't know about you, but during the winter months I am just a blob of a human being.

The cold weather does not give me any motivation to work out. All I want to do is relax with my cats and bundle up in my cozy pajamas.

However, if I got some money to exercise during the coldest times of the year here in Iowa, I might reconsider it.

A Game-Changer in Ohio: New Law to Incentivize Gym Memberships

I was scrolling through social media the other day, when I came across a video from Ohio reporter Natalie Fahmy. She was explaining the details of a new Ohio law that would financially incentivize residents to work out.

Senate Bill 89 was introduced in the Ohio Legislature earlier this month.

The aim of the bill would be to give residents with either a personal trainer or gym membership a deduction on their personal income taxes.

This deduction could be upwards of $1,500, and they would pay up to $200 in a nonrefundable tax credit.

Could This Ohio Law Be Beneficial for Iowans?

Could something like this be a benefit for Iowans?

I know for me, the reason I prefer an at home workout or some sort of outdoor activity over the gym is the cost of a membership.

Iowa's Low Physical Fitness Rankings: How We Compare Nationally

In a report from our sister station, Iowa ranked near the bottom when it came to physical fitness. In 2021, only 20 percent of Iowans reached or exceeded the recommended amount of exercise.

It's recommended that people get "150 minutes of moderate or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity and two days of muscle strengthening per week."

Maybe if there was a dollar amount behind it, Iowans would be more likely to work out?
